Michael Hotchkin
Michael commenced his career with the Crown Law Department and moved to Corrs Chambers Westgarth (when it was called Keall Brinsden) in 1988. Michael left that firm in early 1993 to start this firm in partnership with John Hanly.
Michael has more than 20 years litigation experience as counsel in a variety of courts (from the Perth Magistrates' Court to the High Court of Australia), tribunals and arbitrations (including international arbitrations), in all areas of commercial law, specialising particularly in property disputes of all kinds, planning matters (including heritage issues), construction matters, maritime law, trade practices and contractual disputes, and industrial relations (primarily acting for employers).
Michael also often provide strategic advice on planning and implementing substantial projects, which requires dealing with government at all levels up to either State or Federal Ministerial level.
John Hanly
John Hanly was a barrister in Sydney for ten years before moving to Perth. John arrived in Perth in 1991 and joined Corrs Chambers Westgarth in 1992. His practice involves general litigation work, including personal injuries and family law.
Gilbert Flynn
Gilbert Flynn has more than 19 years experience in commercial law and litigation. Gilbert commenced practice in Perth with Bennett & Co. After several years he joined Mallesons Stephen Jaques, practised in both Perth and Sydney for nine years before spending several years as Special Counsel (IT) at Blake Dawson Waldron.
Gilbert joined Hotchkin Hanly in 2003 and became a partner from 1 January 2004. Although he has considerable experience in litigation (including banking and finance, trade practices, corporations, insolvency/bankruptcy and defamation), Gilbert now primarily conducts a commercial practice, specialising in IT and IP matters, and general transaction based commercial documentation.
Andrew Throssell
Andrew Throssell has over 20 years experience in commercial transactions and disputes. Andrew began his career with Parker & Parker (now Freehills), moved to the National Crime Authority, then to Mallesons Stephen Jaques for five years, both in Perth and Sydney. After that, Andrew worked in-house with British Telecom in London before moving back to Australia and joining Blake Dawson Waldron. Andrew joined our firm in December 2004.
Since joining Hotchkin Hanly, Andrew has dealt with a large number of commercial, construction and property transactions, often acting for developers, builders, building owners and shopping centre owners. Andrew has extensive experience with advising on contentious and complex transactions.
Andrew Buchan
Andrew Buchan is a partner with more than 14 years experience in criminal law and commercial litigation. He has appeared as counsel in numerous contested criminal and civil proceedings, including arbitrations and mediations.
Andrew currently practises predominantly in the areas of building and construction litigation, providing representation and advice in relation to a broad range of building issues including copyright infringement, trade practices legislation, Worksafe prosecutions, Construction Contract Act claims and adjudications, contract drafting and review as well as general building and construction claims.
Peter van der Zanden
Peter van der Zanden rejoined Hotchkin Hanly in September 2008. He was with Hotchkin Hanly from 1996 to 2000 before working with Minter Ellison, Bennett & Co and, most recently, as a partner of Lavan Legal.
Peter has more than 15 years experience in commercial litigation including in the areas of property, corporations, building and construction, insolvency and general contractual disputes.
Andrew Macpherson
Andrew Macpherson served in the Royal Australian Air Force around Australia before studying law with a scholarship. He joined Hotchkin Hanly in March 2005 and has over 10 years experience, specialising in litigation and covering a wide range of practice areas including contracts and leases, construction law and insolvency.
Andrew has appeared in State and Commonwealth Courts in Perth, around Western Australia and In New South Wales, as well as numerous arbitrations and mediations.
Guy Douglas
Guy commenced as a solicitor with Hotchkin Hanly in January 2007 and became a partner in July 2011. Prior to 2007 Guy was a solicitor with Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Perth, and prior to that, with Mallesons in Melbourne.
Guy specialises in commercial litigation, and advises regarding disputes about property and leasing, corporations, building and construction (including arbitrations and adjudications), planning, industrial relations and general contractual disputes. Guy regularly appears as counsel in federal and state courts and tribunals in Western Australia.
